Healthy News - December 2019
Physician referrals to complementary health approaches (CHAs) is interesting. An inquiry found that 53.1% of all US physicians referred patients to at least one CHA in the past 12 months. The most common approaches suggested were massage therapy (30.4%), chiropractic/osteopathic manipulation (27.1%), herbs/nonvitamin supplements (26.5%), yoga (25.6%) and acupuncture (22.4%). Female doctors were more likely than their male counterparts to refer for massage, supplements, acupuncture and mind-body therapies. Psychiatrists, OB/GYNs, and pediatricians were less likely to suggest chiropractic/osteopathic manipulation than general and family practitioners who most often suggested manipulation (54%) and massage (52.6%). (1) And it’s been recorded that first contact care by a chiropractor for issues like back pain, shoulder and hip pain results in lower cost of care as well as clinically similar pain relief and greater satisfaction levels. (2) We love to see this referral among healthcare providers and physicians of all sorts! Fort Wayne chiropractic patients may well benefit from such cooperation in costs savings, pain relief, and assurance in the care they receive.
Listen to the PODCAST with Dr. Kim Lombardy on The Back Doctors Podcast with Dr. Michael Johnson who works with physicians of all professions to benefit patients and especially this patient with hip pain and a slipped disc that troubled her after her hip surgery. His application of The Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management makes his care special.
TIP OF THE MONTH: Embrace the Holiday Season!
Just for fun, take a look at these Danish articles about the advantages of holiday joy and Santa fun! One study of medical doctors whose November conferences (with coffee) were contrasted to December conferences (without coffee but with Santa). The Santa visits boosted the joy to the level of meetings with coffee. (The authors highlight that the research study was “kept secret for the participant in accordance with the tradition of Santa’s elves.”) (3) Another Danish study analyzed issues like belief in Santa and relationship length that may impact divorce rates of doctors just after the holidays. Divorce rates rose least for general practitioners whose relationships were also found to be longer that other medical subspecialties. Believing in Santa was beneficial only for psychiatrists! These authors’ bottom-line recommendation was to enjoy the Christmas fun but do not rely on Santa for the present shopping. Each person must do that for himself/herself! (4) Bring Santa with you to your next Fort Wayne chiropractic appointment! He’ll do us all some good!
