BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET
With the growing recognition that diet plays a valuable role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being developed. A new paper with suggestions for guidelines recommended a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to provide calcium and protein adequate enough to preserve normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are related to a reduced risk of fracture. (1) In other studies, the Mediterranean diet has been said to reduce hip fracture risk. Another new paper states that there is indication that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also lower hip fracture risk as well as threat of lumbar spine osteoporosis in females. (2) A study just released this past month showed that older adults who followed the Meditterranean Diet more strictly had lower chances of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, reduced osteoporosis odds, lower probability of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be motivating to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Cox Chiropractic Medicine Inc finds these new studies interesting enough to share with our Fort Wayne chiropractic patients and their families.
WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?
Good stuff! Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It suggests avoiding sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not easy!
